Casino[edit]

In 2008, MGM Mirage made a large investment in Gold Strike Casino Resort and a commitment to the Tunica market with a multimillion-dollar renovation and remodeling project. The upgrade, which took two years to complete and is the largest in the casino resort's history, included all of Gold Strike's 1,133 oversized rooms and 125 suites, the conference and convention center, the Atrium Café, the Courtyard Buffet and the high-limit gaming and lobby areas. The resort also includes Chicago Steakhouse restaurant, which has won several awards including the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence; a recently opened nightclub, Red Door; a spa and salon; the 800-seat Millennium Theater; and 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) of gaming space with 52 table games and more than 1,400 slot machines.

At 31 stories tall, Gold Strike Casino Resort is one of the most recognizable buildings in Tunica and towers above all other structures.[1] When built, the gold tower was reported to be the tallest building in Mississippi.[2][3]

History[edit]

Circus Circus (1994-97)[edit]

Gold Strike was originally opened by Circus Circus Enterprises as Circus Circus Tunica on August 29, 1994. The building, resembling a circus tent, did not house a hotel. Due to a 50% decline in operating income in 1997, Circus Circus began to renovate the property, adding a 1,200-room tower hotel and other features including a theater.

Gold Strike (1997-present)[edit]

The casino was rebranded as the Gold Strike Casino Resort and given a more upscale theme. The total cost for the remodel was estimated to be $125 million.[4] The Gold Strike's 31-story hotel tower was the tallest building in the state of Mississippi at the time of its opening, providing stark contrast to an area of the state previously devoted mostly to agriculture.[2] In 2009, the resort underwent another multimillion-dollar renovation during which time the property remained opened.

In between, was at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi. Poker room at GS is even more snazzed up and pretty than the last couple of times. Very nice. Great floor staff and very good dealers. Number of players was down a little but we were there at about the worst possible time. Midweek, with the main action down in Biloxi, and with the tourney action in Tunica not to start for another 2 weeks. Still, always fun and usually profitable to play there. They even had some excellent promotions to reward players for playing in the games. My favorite was in the 4-8 game between noon and midnight, they would give away at EACH table every two hours. ok, ok, I won it 3 times. Here's the bad news; The hotel is very sneaky in adding a daily 'Resort Fee' to your bill. This is new because I sure don't remember it previous Januarys or other times I have stayed there. Its not mentioned as part of the poker rate, and it wasn't mentioned at check in. Just appears on your bill after you check out. We were in a hurry to leave so did not get to complain to any manager. Checkout clerk said it was for bottled water in the room and a daily newspaper. HA! We used neither. I have probably stayed at GS 20 different times in the last 8 years. Some of those stays were 12 days or longer. I have brought several others to stay there also - and recommended it here and on blogs, e-mails etc. Now I am very disgusted with them. Three different calls, e-mails to them have gone unanswered as has some cranky comments on their customer satisfaction questionnaire. As an MGM-Mirage stockholder, I actually do want the company to make money. But as a customer I sure resent being taken advantage of. Maybe its a case of corporate greed comes to lil ole tunica. Note -- the Beau Rivage (also MGM-Mirage) was more expensive on room rates, but at least they didn't cheat you out of a few extra $ at checkout. So - Beware! If you are making reservations at GS Tunica be sure to clarify what your room charges really are. Maybe you can get the extra charge removed.

Tunica is also great for us cheapies because all the drinks and food are comped. Actually the poker room gets a good deal from me as I played 33 hours this trip and my friend played a few more hours than that. Seriously, if they told us the rate was that would have been fine. The means almost nothing on an 8 day, 10 casino poker road trip. The is just a red chip toke to the brush or floorman. Its the dishonesty that bugs me. Also, what about the last couple years when I have brought 10 or so other guys there in January? What if a bunch of MY buddies get stuck with the same sneak charge? I don't like it. Shame on you Gold Strike.

So Im guessing thats where the resort fee came from. Was the room nicer, cleaner, etc. ?

They originally tried a 10/day fee for you to use the gym which didn't work very well (a combination of a mediocre gym facility and the fattest state in the nation) so they switched to the 5 dollar PLUS TAX 'spa fee' If you will check, the shoe does have rooms available now (sometimes pricier) actually in the casino instead of the veranda. Good luck..

What does it mean that food and drink are comped in the deal? Can I get it on my first visit to tunica or only after I have established myself? Are there other such poker room rates in the Tunica area?

My info is dated, my last trip to Tunica was March of last year. You book your hotel room, in advance through the poker room. Yes actually call the poker room and book your room through them. Play whatever hours they require, usually five per day, more or less depending upon what part of the country you are planning to play, and you qualify for a reduced hotel room rate. Many casinos offer this benefit to poker players, but not all. In the past food comps were, okay where do you want to eat, but I heard they have tighten up a bit at some of the Tunica properties so I will let someone that actually knows what they are talking about address that question.

carddown journeyman Join Date: Feb 2005 Posts: 245 Poker Room Rate Answers Typically you must reserve your room in advance through the Poker room and give them a minimum of five hours play to qualify for the discounted room. Meals are not included, but you can get the usual meal comps that the room offers while playing. I don't think prior play is necessary, but when I've reserved in the past they asked for my player's card number, so they'll at least be expecting you to join. Not all Mississippi casinos with Poker rooms have a Poker room rate, but I think all the Tunica ones do. Sam's Town is the lowest at , but not the most conveniently located. Gold Strike wins the prized for the combination of location and price.

I pretty much play and stay at the Shoe. Matter-of-fact, James, one of the SSLHE mods, another 2+2er and I are heading there the last weekend of the month. The Shoe books its' poker rooms (at the poker rate) at the Grand. I find that decidedly inconvenient so I just book directly at the Shoe. Since the Shoe doesn't swipe your card at the table, there's really no effective minimum hours of play required if you opt for the poker rate and agree to stay at the Grand. Quote:
What does it mean that food and drink are comped in the deal?
It means that food and drinks, including alcohol, are free. You can even get a meal comped while at the table at the Shoe. Quote:

As I'm enjoying yet another comped meal, it occurs to me that the Shoe has much to offer a poker player. I'll first admit that there's not great game selection for a LHE player. I can't think of another criticism, though. The poker room rates are a bargain; meals, liquor, beer and food at the table are free. There are, however, some things that you should not expect to find there. You won't hear IWTSTH unless you are dumb enough to be trying to cheat the game. You'll also miss out on slowrolling, angle shooting, calling for set-ups and hearing the f-bomb (at the table, I mean). If you enjoy playing with d-bags, you're gonna be disappointed. As for me, I think it's a fine place to play poker.
